FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know to play, at a glance. Can't find your answer? Write to [email protected].

Playing

How do I play?

You hear a tiny slice of a song and have to name it. Type a few letters in the search, pick the right song from the list, and it counts.

If you can't find it, move on to the next clip: it is longer, so easier, but worth fewer points.

How do the clips work?

Each song has 6 clips, each longer than the last: 0.1 second, 0.5 second, 2 seconds, 8 seconds, 15 seconds and then 30 seconds. A wrong guess or a skip unlocks the next clip. After the sixth, the song is lost.

What do the Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert and Insane levels mean?

They say how well known a song is. Easy means hits everyone has heard a hundred times. Insane means tracks almost nobody remembers. The harder the level, the more a right answer is worth.

How are points worked out?

Three things count: the clip you find it on (1000 points on the first, then 800, 600, 420, 260 and 120), your speed (up to x1.25 if you answer within the first 5 seconds) and the level (from x1 for Easy to x2.1 for Insane).

What is the song of the day?

Every day, 5 new songs, one per level, from Easy to Insane. They are the same for everyone, and they change at midnight UTC.

You can play without an account. With one, you keep your day streak, your stats and your place on the daily leaderboard.

Can I play on my own whenever I want?

Yes, with Solo mode: pick themes and levels, add up to 5 Mystery steps if you like, or play one of your imported playlists, from 1 to 300 songs.

Duels

How does a duel work?

Two players, the same song, at the same time. Each starts with 2000 health points. Every round, whoever scores less loses health: the score difference, multiplied according to the round's level. The first to reach 0 loses.

Once a player has found the song, the other one still has 10 seconds to find it too. After 20 rounds, whoever has more health wins.

Why do rounds keep getting harder?

Levels climb each round: Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert, Insane, then again. Each new pass through the levels multiplies the damage (x2 from round 6, x3 from round 11, x4 from round 16): duels always end up being decided.

What is a Mystery round?

From the second round on, there is a one in three chance that the level is drawn at random instead of following the climb. An animation reveals the drawn level just before the round. The damage follows that drawn level, then the climb carries on as planned.

What is the skip vote for?

If neither of you recognizes the clip, you can vote to move on to the next clip without waiting. Both players have to vote, and the vote opens a few seconds after the clip starts.

And the Ready button between rounds?

After each round, you get time to see the answer. When both players press Ready, the next round starts right away. Otherwise, it starts on its own after 20 seconds.

What happens if I lose my connection?

You have 20 seconds to come back: reload the page and the match picks up where it was. After that, you may lose the duel by forfeit.

Ranked

How does the ranked rating work?

Ranked duels use a rating (the Glicko-2 system): beating a higher rated player earns more, losing to a lower rated player costs more. Your rating puts you in a rank: Demo, Single, EP, Album, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Legend, and Headliner for the season's top 100 Legends.

Why don't I have a rank yet?

Your first 5 ranked duels of the season are placement matches. Your rank shows up after the fifth.

How long does a season last?

About 3 months. At the end, you keep a reward based on your rank, and your rating is brought halfway back to the average for the next season.

Rooms and private duels

How do I play with my friends?

Create a private room (2 to 8 players) or a private duel (just the two of you), then share the room code. In a room, you choose the number of rounds (5, 10, 15 or 20), the levels and where the songs come from, including an imported playlist. Points follow the clip each player found it on, and the first three to find it earn a bonus.

Why is the room code blurred?

So it does not leak by accident, for example while sharing your screen. Press the eye to show it, or just copy it.

What is streamer mode?

It hides what should not show up on stream: the chat, other players' usernames and room codes. Turn it on from your account menu. Flags stay visible, since they cannot identify anyone.

Playlists

How do I import a playlist?

In Solo or in a room, paste the link to a public Spotify or Deezer playlist (or YouTube, if it is switched on) and press Import. We look up each track in our catalog of previews: the ones without a preview are set aside.

  • Spotify: open the playlist, tap ··· then Share, then Copy link.
  • Deezer: open the playlist, tap Share then Copy link.
Are there any limits?
  • 5 playlists per account. Delete one to import another.
  • 300 songs at most per playlist.
  • For Spotify, only the first 100 songs of a playlist are available to us.
  • Spotify's personal mixes (Daily Mix, Discover Weekly, Release Radar) are not shared: copy them into a new playlist first.
Why are some songs from my playlist missing?

We only play previews provided by Deezer. A song without a preview, or not found in our catalog, cannot be played. The number of songs found is shown next to the playlist.

Voice and chat

How does voice chat work?

In a match or a room, join voice and allow the microphone in your browser. The sound goes directly between players, without passing through our servers, and is never recorded. Voice is optional.

How do I mute or turn someone down?

In the chat's list of players, you can mute a player's voice, hide their messages, or set their volume with the + and - buttons. These settings stay on your device: the other player does not know.

Someone is being unpleasant. What can I do?

Block them: you will not be matched together any more and you will not see their messages. And report them with the Report button, on their profile or in the chat: the room's latest messages are attached to the report. A person reviews every report, and you are told when it has been handled.

Account

How do I create an account?

With your email address and a password, or in one click with Google. You must be at least 15. Then pick a username and, if you like, a flag.

What are the password rules?

At least 10 characters. Very common passwords and your email address are refused. A phrase of a few words is easier to remember and stronger.

What is the flag for?

It shows next to your username, and when you play someone from the same country, songs from your country mix in with the international hits. It is optional and you can change or remove it in the settings.

Can I change my username?

Yes, in the settings, once every 24 hours.

How do I download my data or delete my account?

In the settings: "Download my data" gives you a file with everything we hold about you, and "Delete account" erases everything, immediately. You can also sign out of all your devices.

I got a sanction. Why, and how do I contest it?

On your next visit, a message tells you what was decided, on what grounds, when, and until when. If you think it is a mistake, write to [email protected] within 6 months with your username: a person reviews the decision again. Everything is explained in the terms of use.

Privacy and safety

What data do you keep about me?

The minimum to run the game: your email, your username, your games and your stats. No ads, no tracking, no selling. The details, with retention periods, are in the privacy policy.

Why is there no cookie banner?

Because we only use essential cookies (staying signed in, the language) and settings saved on your device (volumes, streamer mode). They are exempt from consent. The full list is in the privacy policy.

What can other players see about me?

Your username, your avatar, your flag if you picked one, your stats and your leaderboard position. Never your email address.

Technical problems

I can't hear anything. What should I do?
  • Check the music volume in the game, and that it is not muted.
  • On iPhone, turn off silent mode: it mutes websites.
  • Tap the page once: browsers block sound until you have interacted with the page.
  • If a clip does not load, check your connection and try again. An overly strict content blocker can also get in the way.
The animations bother me. Can I reduce them?

Yes: turn on your system's "reduce motion" option (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android). GuessTheSong respects it and turns off the strongest movements.

Which browsers are supported?

Recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on desktop and mobile. Voice chat needs a browser with WebRTC, which all of these have.

Is the site accessible?

We aim for WCAG level AA: keyboard navigation, screen readers, contrast, reduced motion. The details and known limitations are in the legal notice. A problem? Write to us.

I hold the rights to a song. How do I get it removed?

Write to [email protected] saying which song and what your rights are: we remove it promptly. See also the legal notice.

Still stuck?
